Children & Adolescents
Creative Arts Therapy (incorporating play therapy and sand play) can be very effective with children as it allows them other ways to express what they may not have the language for. It is interactive and practical and the arts offer a way in that is not confronting. Creative modalities used with children and adolescents may include visual art, clay work, dance/movement, music, puppets, story telling, drama, creative writing/poetry and sand play therapy. The arts become the vehicles of expression and stimulate the language that may have been difficult to find.
Common concerns for children and adolescents may be …
- Anxiety
- Friendship issues
- Self Esteem Concerns
- A Change in Family Circumstances
- Bullying
- Grief/loss
- Unexplained Changes in Behaviour
What to Expect
In working with young people I like to explain the way I work in simple terms for them before beginning with something like:
- We work together to try and make sense of what is happening for you
- We use lots of type of art to do this
- You don’t need to be good at art
- We start wherever you want to
